Benalla boy Zak Best headed into the fourth round of the Kumho Tyre Australian V8 Touring Car Series at the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint at Queensland Raceway just nine points behind his teammate Tyler Everingham.
It was a great start to the weekend with Best gaining his first pole position for the season with a time of 1:11.159.
Best edged out his teammate and championship leader Tyler Everingham by 0.25 seconds to score three bonus championship points and narrow the margin to just six points ahead of race one.
‘‘I was really pleased to get my first pole position,’’ Best said.
‘‘We made some minor changes after practice which was enough to give us the advantage.’’
In race one Best got the better start and lead the field into turn one, two seconds ahead of the field with his teammate chasing hard.
Everingham caught Best on the fifth lap, but it wasn’t until lap eight that he passed Best on the inside of turn six.
Best finished second with a slightly reduced eight-point championship deficit to his MW Motorsport teammate.
Best lost second position to Jon McCorkindale into corner one.
Lap 4, Best dragged McCorkindale down the front straight to reclaim a position, finishing runner up to Everingham followed by McCorkindale.
MW Motorsport duo started race three in positions one and two, with McCorkindale getting the jump to lead the field, followed by Best and Everingham.
Best set the fastest lap of the race on lap nine, pulling away from the field to take the win by three seconds and winning his second race of the year, taking his first overall round trophy.
Best is appreciative of the continued support from his partners, Best Leisure Industries, Revolution Racegear, Best Lifestyle Units, Winton Motor Raceway, Bailey Maher Photography and Burke Signs Benalla.
Best is at risk of not making the grid for the final round and is seeking partners to support him in his championship hunt.
